Five (scientifically proven) techniques that can make someone fall in love with you

Twenty eight per cent of women and 48 per cent of men claim they fell in love at first sight, according to a recent study of over 80,000 people in the US.

Which means 72 per cent of women and 52 per cent of men fell gradually – and were open to being ‘persuaded’.

Sadly, there still isn’t a magic potion that will make anyone fall in love with you (though alcohol clearly helps!).

But science has quite a few suggestions!

The following techniques work at the beginning of relationships – when you’ve first met or started dating – rather than to ignite flames that have long flickered out.

And while – quite obviously – none of them can forcesomeone to fall in love with you against their will, they can nudge the odds a lot higher in your favour.

Worth a try, right?

BE EASY TO GET…

Several reputable studies show repeated exposure to practically any stimulus makes us like it more (the only time it doesn’t hold true is if our initial reaction to it is negative).

So forget about being all aloof, evasive and unavailable when you first meet someone you fancy: they’ll just write you off as arrogant and cold and that will be that (unless of course you’re Victoria Secrets good looking and can get away with anything).

Instead, find loads of excuses to spend time with them until you’re convinced you’ve won them over…then start being a little less available.

…THEN HARD TO GET

Image result for playing hard to getOnce you’re satisfied they think you’re nice, now start seeing them a little less and less – until they hardly see you at all.

This is the Scarcity Principle (a term coined by researcher Robert Cialdini): people value and desire something more when it’s rare or difficult to obtain.

It’s obvious really: if piles of diamonds suddenly appeared all over the pavement, we’d no longer covet them.

The Scarcity Principle is why ‘only one left’ marketing ploys make us stop and consider buying something we don’t even really want.

We’re the same with people.

You may have heard of the ‘closing time experiment’.

Researchers wanted to test the old adage that everyone looks a lot more attractive just as the bar or club is about to close.

Some of this is due to alcohol: the more we drink, the more attractive others appear to be.

Which is why the researchers took blood alcohol readings of participants – and found they had little effect on what happened.

Even participants who weren’t getting progressively more drunk as the night progressed, found others more attractive as closing time approached simply because time was limited and there were less people in the bar to choose from.

DON’T DO NICE THINGS FOR THEM, LET THEM DO NICE THINGS FOR YOU

Image result for doing nice things for others

If you do something nice for someone, it makes you feel good on two levels.

You feel pleased with yourself (‘Aren’t I a nice person for making them feel special!’) and extra-warm towards the person you’ve just spoilt.

To justify the effort or expense, we often over idealise how wonderful they are to deserve it. End result: we like the person more.

When someone does something nice for us, we’re pleased.

But there are a whole lot of other emotions that come into play – and they’re not all good.

Sometimes we feel over-whelmed – there’s pressure to live up to being the wonderful person who inspired such a gift/act, not to mention pressure to return the favour.

It’s all even trickier if the ‘nice thing’ comes from someone you quite fancy but aren’t sure about yet.

When we’re infatuated with someone, we’re desperate to do nice things for them.

Truth is, you’re much better off asking them to do you a favour or letting them spoil you.

GIVE THEM THE EYE

Image result for couples in love staring

You can thank Harvard psychologist Zick Rubin for this one.

Rubin set out to see if you could measure love scientifically and achieved it by recording the amount of time lovers spent staring at each other.

He discovered couples who are deeply in love, look at each other 75 per cent of the time when talking and are slower to look away when someone else dares to intrude.

In normal conversation, people look at each other between 30 and 60 per cent of the time.

The significance of what’s now known as Rubin’s Scale is obvious: it’s possible to tell how ‘in love’ people are by measuring the amount of time they spend gazing adoringly.

Some psychologists still use it during counselling to work out how much affection couples feel for each other.

It’s also happens to be remarkably handy information if you want to make someone fall in love with you.

If you look at someone you fancy 75 per cent of the time when they’re talking to you, you trick their brain.

The brain knows the last time someone looked at them that long and often, it meant they were in love.

So it thinks OK, they’re obviously in love with this person as well, and starts to release phenylethylamine (PEA).

PEA is the chemical cousin to amphetamines and it’s secreted by the nervous system when we first fall in love.

PEA is what makes your palms sweat, your tummy flip over and your heart race.

The more PEA the person you fancy has pumping through their bloodstream, the more likely they are to fall in love with you.

While you can’t honestly force someone to adore you if they’re not remotely interested, (they won’t let you look into their eyes for that long, for a start!) it is entirely possible to kick-start the production of PEA using this technique.

Give someone the sensation of feeling in love whenever they’re with you and it’s not such a huge leap of logic for them to finally decide they are!

PRACTISE PUPILLOMETRICS

Gotta love Ms. Monroe!:

We all know ‘bedroom eyes’ when we see them: it’s the look of lust. There’s just one thing you need to get bedroom eyes: big pupils. According to pupillometrics, the science of pupil study, this is the crucial element we respond to.

You can’t consciously control your pupils (one reason why people say the eyes don’t lie) but you can create the right conditions to inspire large pupils and get the effect.

First, reduce light.

Our pupils expand when they’re robbed of it, one reason why candlelight and dimmer switches are de rigueur in romantic restaurants.

It’s not just the softening of light which makes our faces appear more attractive, larger pupils also help.

Scientists showed two sets of pictures of a woman’s face to men. The photograph was identical, except for one thing: the pupils in one set had been doctored to make them larger.

When shown the doctored photograph, men judged the woman as twice more attractive than when shown the real photo.

Our pupils also enlarge when we look at something we like.

Again this can be proved scientifically using pictures.

This time, researchers snuck a picture of a naked woman into a pile of otherwise bland, commonplace photographs then watched men’s pupil size when they flicked through.

Without exception, the men’s pupils expanded on cue.

This means if you fancy someone a lot, your pupils are probably already big, black holes.

To ensure this is happening or to up the effect of your bedroom eyes, focus on the bit of the person you fancy the most.

Just pray it’s above the neck.

Blood types and secret blood groups

There is an ongoing online debate about the secrets of our blood types and our origins. It seems that our blood types can tell a lot more about who we are than what we thought.

One of the first questions I’ve been ask when meeting people in Korea is “what’s your blood type?” This has somewhat puzzled me because initially I thought it might be for medical reasons, you know, in case you get into an accident.. but then some of my students also asked me the same thing.  It wasn’t until 3 months later that I discovered that knowing your blood type is the Korean equivalent of the horoscope.

Type A – The Farmer

Accordingly Type A is a good type to have. Its means that you are  earnest and sensible. You are also very patient and reserved. You are responsible and that makes you a good worker. Other positive traits include  conscientiousness, trustworthiness, and sensitivity. You are also seen as a perfectionist that pay attention to their work

Bad traits include being  over-earnest.As a Type A  you are capable of  attaining a leadership positions but often the amount of tension that goes along with leadership positions will discouraging because you are such a worry-wort. Furthermore because this type is so reserved you often come across as shy or uptight.

Best workouts: Intense exercise increases your levels of the stress hormone cortisol and leads to muscle fatigue and stiffness. You do best by opting for calming activities that help you focus and protect your joints, like Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi, and isometric exercises.

I tried to get as much information on the topic. For me some of it was really true, but not all of the traits are  100% accurate.

Here’s an interesting video about the blood types of famous people

Hard Rock Cafe, Busan – Review

When we went to Busan for the first time we tried to do some research of places to go and see. We were particularly looking for a place where we can eat a western or american style meal, as those are so rare in Korea. We found a website that had some suggestions and we went out of our way to find the place. We even had a meal at one of the restaurants suggested. Although the meal was nice it wasn’t nearly as nice as what we found on our own.

On our 2nd day in Busan we were walking around to find a restaurant that sells breakfast and came across the Hard Rock Cafe. Although they only open at 11 am we immediately decided to go there for dinner. We are not familiar with Hard Rock but I’m sure I’ve heard the name somewhere before. Therefore dinner it was.

We decided on burgers and some cocktails.

The atmosphere was amazing. They had a live band ( I don’t know if they have this in all the Hard Rock cafe’s :p ) and the waiters were really friendly and helpful. All their staff speaks English which always helps when you’re in a foreign country. Personally I think that the food is truly worth the price. Usually all Western style restaurants are expensive but Hard Rock was reasonable compared to other restaurants and the food was much better than said restaurants.

We loved it so much that we took my brother and his wife there the next time we went to Busan and I heard from my brother that he’s been there again a few times afterwards.

P.S A meal cost us about 80,000 won per couple, including drinks. Burgers range from 23,000 -29,000 won. Fillet mignon was around 46,000 won. Ribs were less than 40,000 won and it was a lot of ribs. T-bone steak is 76,000 won and the Large cocktails are 13,000

Barbie Doll by Margie Piercy

A look at how women were stereotyped in the early  20th century, some of these observations are still (if not more) relevant today

Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy

8881c42d1c1b0fa99c118a3b8202c28eThis girlchild was born as usual
and presented dolls that did pee-pee
and miniature GE stoves and irons
and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy.
Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said:
You have a great big nose and fat legs.

She was healthy, tested intelligent,
possessed strong arms and back,
abundant sexual drive and manual dexterity.
She went to and fro apologizing.
Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs.

She was advised to play coy,
exhorted to come on hearty,
exercise, diet, smile and wheedle.
Her good nature wore out
like a fan belt.
So she cut off her nose and her legs
and offered them up.

In the casket displayed on satin she lay
with the undertaker’s cosmetics painted on,
a turned-up putty nose,
dressed in a pink and white nightie.
Doesn’t she look pretty? everyone said.
Consummation at last.
To every woman a happy ending.

Analysis

DGW35_01.jpgWhen one thinks of a Barbie doll the first image that comes to mind is blonde hair, blue eyes long slender legs a flat stomach and perfect butt, with luscious lips and big round eyes. Basically perfect. In the 1950’s men in the army use to refer to woman like Marilyn Monroe, who is still today known for her sexual appeal, as a “ Blond Bombshell” It was Hugh Heffner who first introduced the world to busty blondes in his magazines. A women’s sex appeal and attractive was thus coupled with her outer appearance and not necessarily her personality. From there on out society’s view of what is attractive just excelled into what we have today; bulimic models and celebrities who constantly alter their physical appearances with Botox and plastic surgery.

The poem’s title is Barbie Doll, so our first thought of the girl in the poem, is of a tiny slender girl with blue eyes and blond hair who wears pink frills. This is the view imprint on our beliefs. From the first lines in the poem this girl is forced to abide by societies expectations of what woman should be. She plays with “dolls that did pee pee” and “GE stoves and irons” this remind me of the saying that “men prefer their woman bare foot and pregnant in front of the stove” This is a common societal expectation that woman are there to bear children and take care of their husbands. The girl is also given make-up to play with. Make-up is generally believed to make woman more attractive to the opposite sex. It also enhances a woman’s sex appeal. Olivia St Claire said in her book “203 ways to drive a man wild in bed” that a women’s moist lips reminds men of the female sex organ, thus wearing lipstick would make one more desirable to men. The young girl in the poem is thus taught, what is expected of her from society. Butt during puberty she realises that if she does not look the way society wants her to look. She is teased at school for not being perfect in the eyes of society.

heidi-klum_1889187iThe use of the world girl child is of great significance in the poem. Girls and boys are brought up differently. Studies have shown that fathers play more roughly with boys and that mothers talk more with their daughters than with their sons. In fairy tales the male characters are always strong, whereas the female characters are always beautiful “ who is the fairest of them all” No wonder our magazines and adverts are filled with size zero models parading with half naked bodies. Furthermore women are often primarily seen as objects, as media activist Jean Killbourne observed, “woman’s bodies are often dismembered into legs, breasts or thighs reinforcing the message that woman are objects instead of whole beings”. Women are taught how to act in the presence of the opposite sex in order to be more attractive, which is illustrated in the poem by words like “coy” “hearty” and “wheedle”. The girl is told to be these things, even though it might not form part of her character to tell people only what they want to hear, and acting in a way to please others instead of being you.

Mattel-barbie-fairytopia-elina-doll.jpgThe image of the fan belt is an illustration that this girl might be a “tomboy” in other words not the girly girl that society expects her to be. She is interested in things that boys do like constructing things and participating in physical sports. As a fan belt is a rubber belt in a car to keep the engine cool. The fact that her fan belt wore out also shows that she was no longer able to keep up appearances and act the way society wanted her to act. Therefore she “cut of her nose and her legs”

The repeated use of ‘fat nose’ and ‘thick thighs’ shows us that this imperfect physical feature was referred to continuously to the extend that she thought it would be better to die than to live with imperfections. She feels that the amount of emotional pain inflicted on her for not being ‘perfect’ is so damaging that she would rather take her own life in order to be perfect. Therefore the word consummation is used in the poem as the Oxford dictionary defines the word as ‘the fact of making sth complete or perfect’ Therefore she feels that only by cutting off the offending parts of her body, will she be perfect. She ‘offered’ or gave up what she loved – her nose and legs to society in order to be perfect.

This brings us to the use of “happy ending” in the last line. As stated earlier, in fairytales woman are usually pretty, fair and beautiful. Children are instilled from an early age that boys should play outside to make them strong and boy must not show their emotions and if they do they are said to not “be such a girl” men must be the bread winners in their homes. Girls on the other hand are kept inside their homes and taught how to cook clean and look after children. This is especially taught to them through fairy tales. Thus by using the term “happy ending” it again brings to our attention the rules that society has set for this girl. Often woman in fairy tales are at their most beautiful when they are quietly resting like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Note the similarities between the girl in our poem and Snow White. Only when Snow White is lying in her glass casket does the Prince come to free her from the witch’s poison. Here we can say that the witch’s poison represents society and the Prince represents the afterlife. Thus only through death can the girl be freed and live happily and perfectly ever after… THE END
