Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children – Review

On Sunday afternoon I went to watch Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children. I wanted to watch it on Saturday  but for some reason it was’t showing at any of our cinema’s in our city.

I had no idea what to expect. The only thing I knew was that it was directed by Tim Burton, it’s based on a book by Ransom Riggs and Eva Green is Miss Peregrine. I haven’t read the books yet as I first wanted to see if I liked the movie before I buy any of the books.

The movie is about an ordinary boy who’s grandfather is murdered by a tall eyeless monster minutes before he arrives at his home. His grandfather tells him to follow the post card to 3 September 1943 and that the bird will explain everything….. The police classifies his grandfathers murder as a dog attack and says that he died from a heart attack. After having some difficulty with dealing with his grandfathers death, his father takes him to the island where his grandfathers was in an orphanage for peculiar children, to help him get some closure and this is where his adventure begins where he finds Miss Peregrines home set in a perpetual time loop on the 2nd of September 1943.

The movie is filled with weird and wonderful magical logic. The scenes were visually appealing and somewhat eerie with eyeless monsters, that reminds me of slender-man, a boy that puts animal hearts into weird and scary dolls and bad guys with white eyes and scary looking teeth.

Overall the movie was enjoyable and it provided the right amount of entertainment for a Sunday afternoon. At one point during the movie I wished that there would be more action as a lot of the first part of the movie dealt with the backstory and introduction of all the characters. The end fight provided a climatic battle that made the movie more worth while. I have to admit however that it wasn’t as good as any of the Harry Potter movies or Series of Unfortunate Events.

I give it a 6/10

From Nerd Culture to Fashion Culture.

Star Wars came out in the beginning of this year and I remember seeing Star Wars inspired fashion on the runways. After seeing Star Trek earlier this month I  was again reminded of these designs, therefore I have decided to share them with you today.

Star Trek Beyond – Review

I’ve always been more of a Trekkie than a Star Wars fan. I have fond memories of watching episodes with my family in the evenings. Although I was a little too young to understand everything that was going on, I still enjoyed the show. Since the reboot I have really enjoyed the plot lines and character developments. Therefore when the third instalment came out, I went to watch it.

Spoiler Alert!!!

It took me a while to decide whether or not to review this movie as I am no expert on cinematography terms. This review will mostly include things that I really liked about the movie.

Plot line Vs Trailer.

The trailer makes us believe that the movie is all about Captain Kirk’s retirement or his decision to retire. Although this is one of the themes in the movie, I didn’t experience it as the MAIN theme.

I really enjoyed the plot line as it reminded me of an extended episode based on the original design of the series. ie: the ship goes on a mission, the ships gets damaged and the crew is stranded on an unknown territory with an unknown enemy.

Blockbuster worthiness

Star Trek was action packed with lots of explosions and even a scene with a motorcycle. What can be more  bad-ass than a motorcycle scene?

Then there was the fight scene with Jaylah where she saves Scotty from bandits. It is an intriguing scene with lots of jumping, kicking and nifty tricks up Jaylah’s sleeve. It was a scene that made me want to take up kickboxing or the likes. I thinks she was an amazing character and can’t wait to see more of her in the future.tumblr_obo099f4qx1ud9gp1o1_1280The scripts was well written and included some truly funny moments. I enjoyed Dr McCoy’s sarcastic remarks. I also really enjoyed the characters referring to this song  as ‘classical music’.

Some of my other favorite characters includes Dr McCoy with his dry humor, Scotty and off course the friendship and camaraderie between Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock

Ghostbusters – review

This past weekend I’ve been out to see Ghostbusters. I was a little disappointed to learn that they have cast women to star in the movie. At first I felt that they just wanted to be politically correct or something. I decided however that I would like to go see it seeing as most of the other movies I’ve seen this year has been such a disappointment to me.

All in all I found it quite entertaining. It kept true to the original movie. They kept all the key characteristics of the original characters just with new faces. The storyline followed the same lines as the original so if you’re in the mood for some nostalgia then there you go.

I absolutely loved the fact that they didn’t overdo it with the CGand only focused the computer animation on the ghosts. The ghosts really looked awesome. I also enjoyed the cameo appearances from the original cast and the last stand in the movie was also worth the wait. The final fight scene was also done great with a lot of ghost busting with awesome equipment…

I remember when Independence Day first came out in the 1996 my mom said its like one of those delicious bread rolls you see at the bakery but as soon as you cut it open, its empty inside and this is the way that I’ve been feeling about a lot of the recent movies. They all start of with this massive expectation and then it ends anti-climatically. I miss the long action scenes from the 80’s and 90’s where you almost think the hero’s not going to make it and then he does. In most of the newer movies, the last stand ends so fast, it was almost not worth the wait.

Here are some of the ghosts from the 2016 Ghostbusters movie.

5 Movies you didn’t know were based on literature works

Clueless

One of my favourite childhood movies. Little did I know that this little teen movie is in actual fact based on Emma from one of literature greats, Jane Austin. Only when I read the book in my first year at uni did I realise where the idea for this movie came from. Jane Austen herself said that she was writing about a Heroine that only herself would like. It turns out that in modern times her heroin is much loved by many.

Another teen movie based on the Jane Austen novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’

She’s the man

This delightful movie is based on Shakespeare’s Twelth Night.

10 things I hate about you

Yet another movie based on Shakespeare’s work. A lovely teen movie based on the Taming of the Shrew.

Apocalypse now

This movie is based on Joseph Conrad’s book ‘The Heart of Darkness’. Although the movie is set in a different time and circumstances than Heart of Darkness the same themes are represented. It captures the madness that the Congo caused on the colonisers in the late 1800’s.
