Christmas Gift Ideas for the Geek in you.

My brother, his wife, my husband and I are all a bunch of geeks. We love movies, TV shows, PC and console games and all books not excluding comic books. We love all kinds of merchandise, some more than others and we often buy these things for each other over Christmas or Birthday, so here are some gift ideas from some of our favorite franchises.

Dr Who

My brother absolutely loves Dr Who. His favorite Doctor is the 10th so last year I got him the Dr Who Screw driver but I also liked the Tardis clock and USB drives and then I always like the idea of the cups who change color or pictures when they are hot or cold.

Pokemon.

For those of you who don’t know it yet, Tony Moly, a Korean beauty company has collaborated with Pokemon to create some really cute makeup products that include blusher, tint, skin cover, face packs and even body lotions and creams

You can currently find it at amazon at more or less the same price we get it here in Korea. Most of the stuff are Pikachu but you can choose some of the other Pokemon too when you buy cleansers and creams

  2. Blusher
  3. Skin cover
  4. Face Packs
  5. Creams

In addition there are some cute Pokemon plush toys available at Amazon. I’m particularly mentioning this because they’re prices are around $7 each whereas we are charged $100 here in Korea for the same thing 😦

Star Wars

My brother is a huge fan of Star Wars and I think he would just love these, OK the toaster might be excessive but the idea of it looked good.

Nikon Coolpix P900 VS Canon EOS 750D

Ever since I’ve started blogging I’ve been wanting a new camera, since the only camera I had was my cellphone. Bare in mind that my phone isn’t new or fancy, so the picture quality wasn’t great. In addition I didn’t know anything about photography and since my pictures looked BAD I rarely ever posted them. Since it is my birthday this month my husband bought me a new camera, the Canon EOS 750D. In addition his mother is an avid bird watcher and also wanted a new camera, so she got herself the Nikon Coolpix P900.

I’m not going to go into the specifications of the two camera’s since you can find that anywhere on the internet. What you can’t find however are pictures quality of the two camera’s. Since I had access to both I’ll now share the different pictures.

First off the Coolpix has some amazing zoom. In the first picture you can’t even see the tower on the mountain we are trying to capture.dscn64211

The Tower on the mountain is currently between the two big buildingsdscn64221

Zooming much further you can actually see the tower on the mountain. dscn64231dscn64241

The weather was really misty but the camera still zooms to the extend that you’ll be able to see people on the tower if there were any.

That same night we photographed the moon since it was a supermoon.

Picture 1 is the view from our bedroom window without any zoom with the Nikon Coolpix

Picture 3. Zoomed but not fully zoomed since my husband said you can’t see it’s the moon if you zoom much further than that.

Coolpix VS Canon Pictures.

The picture on the left is the Coolpix and on the right the Canon

I’ve tried to keep the angles the same, but it’s not easy, I didn’t zoom in with the Coolpix since I wanted to see what the quality was like.

The quality is very similar, personally I’m very happy with my Canon and won’t exchange it for the Coolpix even if I got it free but it depends what you’re using the camera for. In my opinion if you’re going to take travel or landscape pictures then rather go for the Coolpix but if you’re more into capturing details without having to zoom, then go for the Canon. In the end its up to you and your purpose for using the camera.

My 3 favorite fictional Psychopaths

Even before Ted Bundy, people have been interested in Psychopaths. Who and what are they, what makes them tick, should we be scared or intrigued. Robert D.Hare, world leader in the study of psychopathy , defines a psychopath as someone with the incapacity for empathy, in other words they lack a conscience. A psychopath may see a women crying in the street over her child that just died and will go home and mirroring her facial expression in the bathroom mirror to try and understand what she felt, without feeling anything. It doesn’t make him a bad person just a person who doesn’t understand emotions.

Unlike the man in my example above, who might be a normal person incapable of violence  but also empathy, the following 3 characters are my favorite, charming, ruthless and manipulating psychopaths from the big and small screen.

Patrick Bateman – American Psycho

Wall Street investment banker, Patrick Bateman, turns into a vicious murderer. Killing anyone from his colleages, homeless people and prostitutes. He is vain, greedy, rich and shallow, and obsesses about his looks and clothes.

Paul Spectre – The Fall

My absolute favorite out of the 3 is Paul Spectre. A Grief counselor, father and husband , starts a series of strangulation s on women in the city of Belfast. With every murder he becomes more confident. I loved to see how the character changed and grew throughout the series.

Picasso – Alex Cross

Ruthless, emotional void, narcissistic Butcher of Slago from the Alex Cross movie. I feel that the movie really captured the character very well. He was a perfectionist, always performing his work with the utmost perfection. Spoiler Alert. In my personal opinion he was better than Alex Cross but in Hollywood the good-guy always wins.

These are my  top three? Who are yours?

The Infiltrator – Review

Sometimes, being in Korea, I feel like we miss out on a lot of movies. Only the big blockbusters make it to our big screens and the other movies take up to 8 months to come to the cinema’s or they don’t even come at all. The infiltrator is one of those movies. The first time I saw anything mentioned about this movie is about a month ago when they advertised it on Korean TV as a DVD release.

It looked pretty good and since we were huge fans of Breaking Bad, we decided to watch the movie in support of Bryan Cranston.

Its a movie about a US official (Cranson) infiltrating the mafia, in the time of Pablo Escobar, as a wealthy business man in order to help them launder their money into the United States.

It was really interesting and had some suspenseful moments. If you like true-life stories this is definitely one to watch.maxresdefault (1).jpg

I have watched some other “based on true life event” movies this year and to be honest some of them should never even have been made.

Spoiler alert

I sometimes think that while being an undercover agent/infiltrator is a dangerous job there are other aspects that people never really think about. When you become engaged with the people you are investigating, as a person, it is impossible not to make some kind of an emotional connection with those people. You become friends and you might even get along better with these ‘criminals’ than you might with people in your everyday life. I just think it must be hard to both do your job and betray people that has become your friends.

download-1All in all if your looking for an interesting movie on a Saturday afternoon, keep this one in mind.

I give it an 8/10

The Accountant – Review

A movie about loyalty and Asperger’s.

Plot

Christian Wolff ( Ben Afleck) is an accountant for some of the most dangerous people in the world. As a Ray King(J.K Simmons), the head of the department of treasury Crime enforcement division, is preparing to retire he is adamant to find out who ‘The Accountant’ is. Christian takes on a legitimate client, who’s accounting clerk found an in discrepancy in the books amounting up to millions of dollars. As Christian uncovers the truth, the bodies start to drop.

ben-affleck-first-look-at-the-accountant-social.jpg

The movie is deeper than the plot suggest. My one friend commented that the accountant is the nerdy Batman, which was pretty funny at the moment. The movie however is about a man with Asperger’s, an Autism spectrum disorder. He was raised in an Army family. His mother left him and his brother with their father when she couldn’t deal with the pressures of having a son with Autism. His father was more of a ‘no pain no gain’ kind of guy and believed that instead of creating a sensory environment for his son where he won’t have to deal with sensory overload, he believes that ‘if bright lights and loud noises bothers his son, then those are the things that needs to be increased because the world is a noisy place’. He sends his sons to various martial arts institutes to train with masters from different art forms. Therefore making him a ‘killing machines’.

the-accountant-645x370

The movies touches on some aspects of Asperger’s in a way I haven’t really seen in a movie, it also gives the world some information on what a person with Asperger’s goes through socially.

The movie was interesting and there were sufficient action, it also had a good story line for an action movie.

If you are interested in Asperger’s and don’t want to read psychology books about it you can always read HOUSE RULES by Jodi Picoult. She gives us a deep look into the lives of Aspies, their families and the communities they live in.
