Passengers-Review

Starring Chris Pratt (Jim Preston) and Jennifer Lawrence (Aurora Lane).  Don’t read if you haven’t seen the movie already

Passengers is a story about a man who wakes up from his hibernation pod after his ship is damaged by meteor fragments. He wakes up only 30 years into his 120 year journey towards a new planet Homestead II. He wakes up to find that he is the only person on the whole ship who is awake accept for a android called Arthur, played by Micheal Sheen. In his mission to find out what happened to him and why he woke up he finds that all the fancy programmes on the spaceship are of no help and only have limited prerecorded information. Most of the information he found that could possibly help him was only theoretical.

In addition the social class system was in place even though he was the only passenger awake, since he didn’t have a gold class ticket he was limited to only black coffee and basic breakfasts like cereal and oats. After using all the possible facilities on the ship, some of them he had broken into, he found that he felt pretty alone, a situation that reminded me a lot of Tom Hanks movie, Cast Away.

One night while trying out the outer-space facility he decides to take his own life because of the loneliness but he doesn’t go through with it. Instead he accidentally notices a woman in the hibernation chamber. He then starts to read her files and tries to get to know her. After much inner struggles with himself he decides that he wants to wake her up too, to reduce his own loneliness but he knows that if he wakes her up he will doom her to loneliness too…

I really enjoyed the movie. I think it is because somehow we can relate to it because we sometimes also feel alone and feel that we can’t do anything to change our circumstances. In the movie, Arthur suggests to Jim that instead of wishing he was somewhere else he should make the most of where he is and this really hit home for me. I enjoyed the movie much more than I expected.

Some things in the movie also showed that some times you think you have bad luck but it could rather be a matter of fate, for example the fact that Jim woke up Aurora. Although it might have been the wrong choice to condemn someone else to a lifetime of loneliness, this act helped them save 5000 other passengers on the ship who could have died if they didn’t wake up to save the ship.

I’ll give it a 7/10

Home Decor ideas

If you don’t know this by  now my bedrooms theme is basically ‘Union Jack’ I really like the colours  and my husband also thinks that the bedroom is not too girly this way so we’re trying to add some more colour to the bedroom and we’re always looking for some cute British inspired home decor ideas.

This is what I’ve found this week. I’ve recently painted my bedroom dresser white, but we really need an extra one since we have a lot of clothes but not a lot of closet space.

  1. Pillow spotted on atticmag
  2. Dresser from livingroompaintideas.net
  3. Union Jack Phone from cuckooland.com
  4. Mirror from forwooddesign.com

My next project is to change our bedroom mirror. It was a mirror that was left here by the previous teachers and its quite old so we will try and make it look vibrant and loved again 😀

Homemade fresh tomato soup

Hey everyone we’ve received our first snow of the winter. This winter has been strange. Last winter it was already raining mid December but this year we’ve only gotten snow last week. It isn’t quite winter unless it snows here in Asia but since its nice and cold I’ve made us some lovely fresh Tomato soup. Almost all the ingredients are fresh accept for the herbs, those are all dried.

img_6982-2img_6979img_6980img_6987

The soup was extremely filling for a veggie soup. I asked my husband to buy us some bread to eat with the soup and he bought a huge  baguette, I ended up eating only one slice. The soup had a lovely tomato taste but you could really feel the thyme and bay leaves on your tongue. I planned on adding some cream afterwards but it totally wasn’t necessary.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • half an onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1½ tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 4 cups chicken broth (more to thin out the soup at the end as needed)
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 20 fresh baby tomatoes (any kind)
  • 2 tbs sugar ( to reduce the sour taste of the tomatoes)

First I boiled some water in the kettle and poured it in a bowl. I then added the tomatoes and let them stand there until the tomato skins started to come off. I then removed the tomatoes from the water and removed the skins.

Fry the bacon in a pan until browned then add the garlic, onions, red pepper and carrots, bay leaf and thyme and saute with a little butter for 10 minutes until the carrots are tender and the flavour is infused.

Add the ketchup. Squash the tomatoes and  add to the mixture. Add the chicken broth and sugar and simmer over a low heat for 30 minutes . If your pan is to small you can transfer your mixture to a pot instead.

When cooked pour the soup into a food processor and puree. Now its ready to serve and enjoy!!!

DIY Lace Choker

Over the past few months I’ve seen increasingly more and more chokers. I remember when I was around 13 years old, chokers were quite a thing. We all had them. They were made from plastic and probably not really fit for a 13 year old. I remember that Pamela Anderson had a barb wire tattoo on her arm in her movie Barb Wire and then we got all those barb wire inspired chokers. It seems however that the choker has returned and I like it. I’ve seen a lot of really pretty ones but since I love lace, I’ve decided to make a lace choker.

What you’ll need.

  3. Snap buttons (2)

Button the ribbon and fold it in 2. Check where the middle is and sew your charm on… and viola, you’ve got a choker.

I’ve also made a little ribbon with the rest of the lace that I could slip on to a bobby pin for my hair

I hope you like these and try your own designs 🙂

Korean Souvenirs

We have officially started our holiday countdown. For those of you who don’t know this yet, we’re going back home to South Africa for a month to take a little break. We’re leaving on Thursday and we’re just about ready to go. We haven’t packed yet but we have already bought some souvenirs to take back home.

Its not very easy to choose what to take, because you want to take something that’s Korean but also not so much Korean that you’re family can’t use it, for example chopsticks aren’t very useful in western countries unless you like a lot of Chinese, Japanese and Korean dishes. You also want to take something home that’s special.

img_6915

This is what we’ve decided to take. Honey flower cakes and Honey Butter Walnuts. Honey and Butter is something that is truly very Korean. We get all kinds of Honey infused foods here, from bread and pizza to potato chips and even nuts so I thought that would be a nice treat for our parents. I’ve also gotten some Green Tea Kit Kats.( I see they’re actually from Japan…. but I’m taking them home in anyway 🙂 ) In addition to honey butter, Koreans love Green Tea in their cakes and sweets and I thought that would be really nice for the people back home to try.

As mentioned previously chopsticks might not be the best gift but I got some in anyway.

img_6918 I also bought a french brandyimg_6920

and some cute traditional Korean key-chains.img_6924

Korea is also known for it’s amazing beauty products so I’m also taking some of the Tony Moly Pokemon cosmetics home.

Now all that’s left is packing 🙂
