Workout of the Week #2

Since I’ve been in my 20’s I’ve been too scared to use a jump rope as I felt heavy and unable to jump, but a few years ago I saw this lovely little exercise routine and decided to give it a try. It was much easier than I expected even though I hit myself with the rope more than once or twice.

This is one of my favorite exercises of all time. Read More

How to be fit at any age

In your 20’s

During your 20’s your reasons for being fit and sleek might not be for health reasons but rather for vanity reasons. In your 20’s you have a lot of energy to burn so why not start a healthy lifestyle early. Now is the time to build a solid framework for later in life. During this period its easier to lose weight and build muscles. Finding a good balance between cardio and weight training will help you achieve your fitness goals. During your 20’s you’re also more likely to experiment with various exercises and sports, therefore you’ll be able to find something that you can do and love for years to come. Just remember to avoid over training as fatigue can set you back on your health and fitness goals.

No need for pictures of women in their 20’s they are all still gorgeous and fit.

In your 30’s

The reality is that women in their 30’s begin to lose muscle and bone density. Another issue is that it becomes harder to lose weight. In your 20’s you could eat healthy for 2 weeks and have a six pack or fit into those old jeans while in your 30’s you’ll have to eat really lean for 6 weeks to have the same results. Although it is harder to build muscle it is still possible. One of the most important parts of our bodies that we have to maintain in strengthen during this period is the core muscles. If you don’t maintain your core it will become increasingly difficult to perform normal daily activities as you reach your 40’s. Cardio and strength training as well as adding circuits into your exercise program will provide a nice balance.

In your 40’s

During your 40’s most women have settled for huffing and puffing. It is now that it is most essential not to fall off the fitness bandwagon. Now is when more fat deposits settle on our waists. While strength training is still important more intensive cardio sessions will help keep the weight off.

Advice to my younger self.

Dear Younger Self.

Now that I’m 31, I have some things to say to you

First go study. Don’t wait until your late 20’s. You are much smarter than you think. You have the potential. Just because you didn’t do so well in school doesn’t mean that your dumb. You’ll be able to pass both your degrees with distinction just go for it.

Stop telling yourself you are fat and ugly. Wait until your 26 then you’ll know what is fat. Stop complaining and do something about it. Get in the gym now so that I don’t have to work so hard later. You are still young and beautiful enjoy that and stop being so negative, I’m still trying to clean up after your mess.

Stop buying on credit. By the time you’ve paid off that little blue dress you won’t even be wearing it anymore. That dress isn’t really worth it in any case, so don’t even buy it. If you start saving now, you’ll be able to afford the things you really want later and you won’t worry about your old age so much.

Love your husband more, he really is a keeper. And spend more time with your family. Soon some of them won’t be there anymore. Also visit Julian more, one of these days he’s going to Korea and then you won’t see him for 4 years.

I would hope that you will follow my advice but as we both know, it’s already too late

Sincerely yours

Your future self.

My favourite YouTube guru’s

Although I do not spend too much time on YouTube, there are quite a few YouTubers I like to follow and subscribe to.

When it comes to beauty, hair and makeup I quite like Luxyhair and Leeannesays. Leeanne has a great personality and she is somewhat quirky, I really like watching her do her makeup and hair while luxyhair always has great hair styling ideas.

When we first decided to come to Korea we didn’t have a lot of information about Korea. Therefore we had to search for a lot of things on the internet. One of the things I came across was Simon and Martina’s Eat your Kimchi videos. It is funny and informative and gave us some ideas about what to expect and where to go in Korea

For fitness my go to girl is Zuske Light. She has these 12 – 15 minute workouts. They aren’t always easy but it is fast and gives you a cardio AND weighted workout blast. I also use her videos for some inspiration or if I want to try out some new moves. A while ago I did her arm balance challenge, it was a lot of fun and different from the usual kind of exercises.

Last but not least I like to watch college humour  if I’m in the mood for a laugh

There are many other channels I like to follow but these are the Top 5 ones for me!!!!

Stying fit in a Foreign country

Staying fit is pretty hard. You have work, family and other daily occurrences that makes it hard to stay fit. When moving to a new country you have other factors at work like not knowing where any gyms are and not being able to communicate with the locals to find the right price for gym membership among many others.

When we first arrived in Korea we were like Hansel and Gretel at the gingerbread house. We ate everything we could find. We were in food heaven, but as it turns out it wasn’t really heaven. :p

To get my mind in the game again took me a very long time, I must confess. Luckily because we don’t have a need for a car in Korea, we walk everywhere. We can walk for hours on end. We tried joining a few gyms but our first gym ($45 per month) was very uninspiring so we didn’t go everyday and then later we joined a “fancy” gym ($80 per month)It went well for a few months but we started going less and less until we skipped weeks on end. We eventually cancelled our membership but decided that we still have to keep going, so we started going to gym at the park and now that it’s warmer its becoming easier to go everyday. We do a variety of things. Sometimes we jump rope and sometimes we do pull-ups on the bar equipment.

In addition we generally do bodyweight type exercises. My husband goes to the Gym once or twice a week (we pay $2.50 per day) to exercise the muscles he can’t exercise at the park. We also ride our bikes ever so often.

On the days that we don’t go to the park or ride our bikes we try and walk for 20-30 minutes so as to keep moving. I’ll keep you updated on our quest for health and fitness.
